More and more wild animals are on the verge of extinction and others are on the endangered list. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to solve this problem?
It is observed that a large number of wild species are going extinct and other animals are declining at an alarming rate. There are many possible reasons for this trend. However, it can be curbed by taking adequate measures.
To begin with, one of the primary reasons is poaching. To elaborate, wild animals are hunted and killed on a large scale for local as well as for international trade. Apart from that, huge monetary benefits are gained from such illegal activities. A case in point is the population decline of Royal Bengal Tigers which are hunted mainly for their skin, bones and for medicines. As a result, it poses great threat to the wildlife and illicit hunting of animals especially exotic animals is putting their life in danger.
Another potential reason is deforestation. To explain, extensive cutting of trees for meeting various personal and industrial demands is reducing the area and richness of their natural habitat. As a consequence, severe environmental degradation stems from it. For example, as per the data gathered by IUCN, Koala population has been rapidly reducing due to deforestation. Hence, it is undoubtful that it risks the life of several wildlife creatures.
One effective solution to deal with this problem is formation of wildlife sanctuaries. For instance, Gir National Park is the sole place where endangered Asiatic Lions is found and protected. As it not only helps to protect vulnerable species but also provides them a forested area apt for survival and breeding. Giving awareness on the importance of guarding home and life of wild species could be considered as another viable remedy.
In conclusion, even though there are reasons leading to the endangerment of many wildlife, timely and proper implementation of the above-mentioned solutions may tackle this problem to a great extent.
