Essay 9 – Meat Consumption (Mixed Type)

Meat production requires relatively more land than crop production. Some people think that as land is becoming scarce, the world’s meat consumption should be reduced. What measures could be taken to reduce world’s meat consumption? What kinds of problem might such cause? Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

While the world population is increasing every year, the land must be used effectively to avoid its scarcity. For the effective utilization of farmland, the cultivation of crops must be raised instead of meat as it needs comparatively lesser area. However, to dissuade the habit of having meat in the diet certain steps can be taken, yet the possible consequences cannot be ignored.

To begin with, the only way to cut down the meat consumption is to introduce alternatives. To elaborate, people must be encouraged to consume products such as legumes, soya beans and seafood which are as nutritious as that of meat. Additionally, GM crops and food supplements can also be used for compensating the proteins provided by meat. For example, Tofu is a classic meat substitute that has been eaten by vegans in Indonesia for several years. Thus, by adopting alternate food options, people’s affinity towards meat can be curbed.

Although measures are there for reducing meat usage they might be struck by public refusal since the choice of food is a personal interest. To explain, having food considered more than a physical need, taste, pleasure, and quality factors are significant which cannot be promised from any meat alternatives. Besides, the safety of GM crops still   exists as a controversial topic among scientists. Therefore, even if the remedies are there to curtail meat consumption, its social acceptance cannot be guaranteed. For instance, the Indian government’s agenda to prohibit beef was protested strongly by citizens in several parts of the country.

To conclude, while there exists some solutions to decline meat intake the adverse impacts correlated to those cannot be resisted.
